Abodo Vulcan Complies with New EU Fire Regulations

Abodo Vulcan Vertical Grain and Flatsawn timber complies with EU Fire Regulations with a fire class rating of D - s1 d0.

With climate change comes greater risk of fire events, sparking new regulations worldwide for cladding materials. In May this year, the EU Commission set out a Delegated Regulation on the conditions for fire classification of untested solid wood panelling and cladding, which will come into force on 20th August.

This means that all modified wood, including thermally modified products, must be tested separately to maintain fire class rating D.

At Abodo, we have been anticipating this change by commissioning independent fire testing for our products, to both ensure they meet the new regulation and to keep homeowners and building users safe.

Our tests have shown that our most used claddings, Abodo Vulcan Flatsawn and Vertical Grain, meet this fire rating, which states that a minimum thickness of 20mm must be maintained to comply with a D - s1 d0 rating. This rating has been achieved without the need for external fire protection treatment, in keeping with our ethos of non-toxicity, safety and durability for the end user.

When structures are designed to be open air using Vulcan battens, these must be separately tested, as there can be variation in these designs according to local fire authorities. In some areas where a B rating is required, Vulcan products may still require fire retardant treatments.

Contact Abodo for advice on the best treatment to use in these situations.
